Plovdiv
We spent 2 nights at Bortsch Campsite in Tsalapitsa, 25 minutes drive away from Plovdiv, as we didn't feel comfortable leaving the Camper van in any of the unsupervised parking lots in the city. The campsite owner, Dimitri moved to Bulgaria from Ukraine 10 years ago: he kindly gave us a lift into Plovdiv in the morning, and we took a taxi back after a day sightseeing: alltaxi drivers refused to take Josie, but finally we persuaded a taxi driver with an estate car to allow Josie to travel in the boot.
Plovdiv is a lively town, with lots of history: in the town centre Roman remains have been nicely integrated into newer buldings/architecture: the amphitheater is a highlight, but there is also a stadium, of which only one end remans, and a theatre, used by the Roman parliament,
Restaurants were expensive by Bulgarian standards, but the quality of the meal we had was excellent.
